Ivy

Poor little Ivy had a rotten start in life. She was a working Springer Spaniel who was “trained” as a gun-dog by having a gun fired over her head. Consequently she was always scared rigid by any loud noises. Presumably because she was such a useless gun-dog, she was shut up in a rabbit hutch and left in her own mess. When she came here the lower part of her body was stained bright orange.

One day a neighbour of her owner saw him giving her a kicking and intervened and punched the owner. He then took the dog and dumped her in the pound. There she was so terrified – climbing the walls – that the pound thought they would never be able to re-home her and so she was offered to me. For a long while she was very frightened. She didn’t emerge from her den for weeks except to dash to the garden and dash back. Gradually she became more confident but she remained damaged by the abuse.

I don’t know how old Ivy was when she came to Kim’s Home. She was here for 6 years and she died too young. She had a growth in her chest cavity that was increasingly hampering her breathing and causing her pain. The vet said that she could do nothing for her and she had stopped eating. So I had to let her go.

I miss my quirky, nervy, bonkers, loving little Springer. She was happiest with a ball, running after it, swimming for it or cuddled up in her bed with it. She left Kim’s Home in January 2012.
